Text:

1. Stabat Mater dolorosa

juxta crucem lacrimosa,

dum pendebat filius.

2. Cuius animam gementem,

constristatem et dolentem

pertransivit gladius.

3. O quam tristis et afflicta

fuit illa benedicta,

mater unigeniti!

4. Quae moerebat et dolebat,

pia Mater, dum videbat

nati poenas inclyti.

5. Qui est homo qui non fleret,

Matrem Christi si videret

in tanto supplicio?

6. Quis non posset contristari

Christi Matrem contemplari

dolentem cum Filio?

7. Pro peccatis suae gentis

vidit Iesum in tormentis,

et flagellis subditum.

8. Vidit suum dulcem Natum,

moriendo desolatum,

dum emisit spiritum.

9. Eja, Mater, fons amoris

me sentire vim doloris

fac, ut tecum lugeam.

10. Fac, ut ardeat cor meum

in amando Christum Deum

ut sibi complaceam.

11. Sancta Mater, istud agas,

crucifixi fige plagas

cordi meo valide.

12. Tui nati vulnerati,

tam dignati pro me pati,

poenas mecum divide.

13. Fac me tecum pie flere,

crucifixo condolere,

donec ego vixero.

14. Juxta crucem tecum stare,

et me tibi sociare

in planctu desidero.

15. Virgo virginum praeclara,

mihi iam non sis amara,

fac me tecum plangere.

16. Fac, ut portem Christi mortem,

passionis fac consortem,

et plagas recolere.

17. Fac me plagis vulnerari,

fac me cruce inebriari,

et cruore filii.

18. Flammis ne urar succensus,

per te, Virgo, sim defensus

in die iudicii.

19. Christe, cum sit hinc exire,

da per Matrem me venire

ad palmam victoriae.

20. Quando corpus morietur,

fac, ut animae donetur

paradisi gloria. Amen.

English translation:

1. The grieving mother stands,
weeping, by the side of the cross
where her son was hanging.

2. Whose spirit moaning,
constricted and divided,
pierced by the sword.

3. O how sad and tormented
was she, the blessed
mother of the only begotten son.

4. Pious mother, who mourned and grieved
whilst watching
the punishment of her glorious son.

5. Who is human who would not weep
if they saw the mother of Christ
kneeling in such suffering.

6. Who could not be saddened by
observing Christ's mother
hurting with her son.

7. For the sins of his people
saw Jesus in a torture device
and subjected to whipping.

8. Looking at her sweet child,
dying alone,
breathing out his spirit.

9. Ah, mother, source of love,

let me feel the strength of pain

as you mourn.

10. Let my heart be ablaze

in loving Christ God,

so that it pleases him.

11. Holy mother, this you do,

on the cross pierce

strongly my heart.

12. Your wounded son,

so worthy to suffer for me,

divide your punishments with me.

13. Let me weep with you in mercy,

feeling your pain as you are crucified,

as long as I shall live.

14. Standing firm with you by the side of the cross,

I desire to share

in your striking.

15. Splendid virgin of virgins,

towards me do not be sad,

let me mourn with you.

16. Grant that Christ's death is conveyed,
his passion shared,
and his wounds contemplated.

17. Inflict these wounds on me,
at the cross drench me
in the blood of the children.

18. Through you, virgin, let the fire of love
not destroy and consume, but be a
defence in the day of judgement.

19. When it is time to leave from here,
through the mother,
grant me peace.

20. When the body dies,
as the soul is given to paradise,
grant it glory.
